What’s said on the campaign trail, you know, those folks don’t have a lot of responsibilities. They’re not commander in chief. And when I see the casualness with which some of these folks talk about war I’m reminded of the costs involved in war. I’m reminded that the decision that I have to make in terms of sending our young men and women into battle and the impact that has on their lives, the impact it has on our national security, the impact it has on our economy. This is not a game. There’s nothing casual about it.

An atheist loves his fellow man instead of god. An atheist believes that heaven is something for which we should work now – here on earth for all men together to enjoy. An atheist believes that he can get no help through prayer but that he must find in himself the inner conviction and strength to meet life, to grapple with it, to subdue it, and enjoy it. An atheist believes that only in a knowledge of himself and a knowledge of his fellow man can he find the understanding that will help to a life of fulfillment. He seeks to know himself and his fellow man rather than to know a god. An atheist believes that a hospital should be built instead of a church. An atheist believes that a deed must be done instead of a prayer said. An atheist strives for involvement in life and not escape into death. He wants disease conquered, poverty vanquished, war eliminated. He wants man to understand and love man. He wants an ethical way of life. He believes that we cannot rely on a god or channel action into prayer nor hope for an end of troubles in a hereafter. He believes that we are our brother’s keepers and are keepers of our own lives; that we are responsible persons and the job is here and the time is now.

Troy Davis was wrongfully executed last night, and the struggle to save his life has gotten world-wide attention for the pure injustice and inhumanity of his circumstance. Everyone knows that this was a failure on the part of our justice system, when a presumably innocent man could be executed without sufficient evidence based on the modern principles and practices of our legal system.
One of my soulmates, Chace, worked diligently as a law student at Santa Clara University for The Innocence Project. “The Innocence Project is a national litigation and public policy organization dedicated to exonerating wrongfully convicted individuals through DNA testing and reforming the the criminal justice system to prevent future injustice.”
Having been privileged enough to meet one of the main volunteers for T.I.P. just a few months ago, I was extremely touched by her story of fortitude and perseverance in helping to rebuild the life of a wrongfully convicted man, who had already served 8 years in prison. Through her selfless, noble efforts, she was able to get this man free.
